Norton Brown Virtual Herbarium

We are creating a Virtual Herbarium of the physical collections held at MARY so that anyone interested in the specimens can access high resolution images and label information online. During a project funded by the USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service, Work Study Students imaged approximately 21, 000 specimens from Maryland. We are in the process of databasing the associated label information including ecological, life form, and locality data.

The Norton Brown Virtual Herbarium uses a custom PHP based search engine to query our collection database, which was built using Specify 6 software. Please direct any questions or comments regarding the virtual herbarium to Nikolaus Anderson.

We follow APG3 for classification and also consult primary literature, The International Plant Names Index , The Plant List and Tropicos for taxonomic issues. Not all of the online specimens have been vetted by the Curator of the Herbarium. Please contact the Curator ( jdhall@umd.eduif have any questions concerning the identification of a specimen.
